PHYSICAL EDUCATION POLICIES FOR GRADES 7 – 12

 

PHYSICAL EDUCATION IS A NEW YORK STATE REQUIREMENT

 

New York State Commissioner’s Regulations require all students to be scheduled, attend, and receive a successful assessment in Physical Education each week during each semester of the school year for students in grades 7 -12.

 

New York State Learning Standards for Physical Education

STANDARD 1 – PERSONAL HEALTH AND FITNESS

  • Students will perform basic motor and manipulative skills.
  • They will attain competency in a variety of physical activities and proficiency in a few select complex motor and sport activities.
  • Students will design personal fitness programs to improve cardiorespiratory endurance, flexibility, muscular strength, endurance, and body composition.

STANDARD 2 – A SAFE AND HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT

  • Students will demonstrate responsible personal and social behavior while engaged in physical activity.
  • They will understand that physical activity provides the opportunity for enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and communication.
  • Students will be able to identify safety hazards and react effectively to ensure a safe and positive experience for all participants.

STANDARDS 3 – RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

  • Students will be aware of and able to access opportunities available to them within their community to engage in physical activity.
  • They will be informed consumers and be able to evaluate facilities and programs.
  • Students will also be aware of some career options in the field of physical fitness and sport.

 

DRESS CODE POLICY

 

  • Students are dressed appropriately for safe participation in class activities.
    • Proper attire includes athletic gym shorts, sweatpants, t-shirt, sweatshirt/hoodie, and sneakers; different from what they wore to school.
    • Each student will be assigned a combination locker to store their PE clothing, and personal property in during their class time.
    • Students are allowed to make up one unprepared per quarter for full credit. All others will remain a zero.

*Unprepared students may not participate in class activities, causing their participation grade to be affected.

 

ABSENCE POLICY

 

Any absences without written prior approval needs to be made up within 10 school days of returning to school.  Written prior approval must be given by your teacher for school related absences including field trips and state testing.

Acceptable Make-Up Procedures:

  • Attend a 10th period in the fitness center/gymnasium with PE teacher.
  • Work out in the fitness center before school for a minimum of 40 minutes.
  • Arrange a time with your PE teacher to attend one of their other classes of the same grade level. Must be arranged ahead of time and have a written pass from the PE teacher.
  • Any student making up a class in the fitness center must obtain a make-up slip from the Fitness center attendant.
  • If a student chooses not to participate in a class activity, the student will receive a daily score of zero and will not be able to make-up that class.

 

MEDICAL LIMITATIONS, RESTRICTIONS, AND EXCUSES POLICY

 

  • Any student with medical limitations for participation in PE must bring in a note from their doctor indicating specific limitations directly to the school nurse. This should include duration and extent of the limitations.If the limitations are partial, the note must include specific types of activities the student may not participate in.
  • In order to return to activity the student must present a doctor's release to the school nurse.
  • Should a student become ill during the day and wish to be excused from Phys Ed they will need to have a note from the school nurse.(All medically excused classes will have to be made up for full credit.)
  • Students who are excused from all PE activities for an extended period of two weeks or more should consult their PE teacher for an alternative assignment.

 

GRADING POLICY

A numerical grade for Physical Education will be determined quarterly for each student in grades 7-12, and is included in their respective overall grade point average.

 

This numerical grade will be determined by the following criteria for each unit:

 

60%     Daily Grade - Active Participation/Personal & Social Responsibility & Safety

 

Daily Rubric Criteria:

  • Arrives in class on time and prepared, and abides by school/PE class rules regarding, behavior, language, etc.
  • Participation & effort in each daily activity to the the individual student’s fullest potential.
  • Respects classmates, teachers, and physical education equipment.
  • Demonstrates sportsmanship, positive attitude, cooperation, and safety of others.

Daily Rubric Score:

 

4 Points – Always demonstrates

3 Points – Usually demonstrates

2 Points – Occasionally demonstrates

1 Point – Rarely demonstrates

0 Point – Never, refuses to demonstrate

 

20%     Skill Assessment – Application of Skills, Strategy, and Rules for Activity

 

Unit of Instruction Skills Criteria & Score:

Proficient:       100%

Competent:     95%

Average:          90%

Beginner:        85%

 

20%     Cognitive Assessment – Knowledge of History, Rules, & Etiquette (Code of Behavior)

 

Assignments, daily workout records, projects, quizzes, tests, etc.:    Based on 100% scoring.
